Dartboard stands – What’s the fuss all about?

I’ve never used a stand up dart board, in fact to be honest, I never even knew what a stand up dart board was!

That’s because my dartboard setup is traditional as my board is fixed to a sliding door in my office.

So I wanted to see what a stand up dartboard is, where one would best be used and who would benefit from using one.

Finally of course, which is the best stand up board to get!

What is a Stand up dart board?

A stand-up dartboard (or dartboard stand) is for people who don’t have the room in their house to have a dartboard permanently located on a wall or door. It is usually a tripod that has a bracket to fix a traditional dartboard to. The height can be adjusted to suit standard dartboard mounting height (5 ft 8 in or 172cm).

How do you fit a stand up dartboard / dartboard stand?

The good news is that dartboard stands are pretty easy and fast to set up.

  1. Set tripod feet and fit the centre column.
  2. Fit the dart board to the bracket.
  3. Attach bracket to the centre column.
  4. Adjust height so that the bullseye is 5 foot 8 inches (172cm) from the floor.
  5. Measure the throwing line 7 ft 9.25 inches (237cm) away from the face of the dart board
  6. Play!

Do dart stands wobble?

It must be said that the major downfall of owning a freestanding dartboard is that they are obviously not as stable as if they were fixed to a wall.

So whilst you may notice that a stand wobbles when a dart hits the board, as in many other things in life, you get what you pay for and using a quality stand will minimise the amount of dart board wobble.

How do I stop my dartboard from wobbling?

Whilst we are on the subject of dartboard wobbles,  it’s relatively easy to stabilize a dartboard on a wall.

  1. Check that the large bolt in the middle of the bracket holding the dart board onto the wall is secure.
  2. Then check that the bracket attached to the wall is firmly fixed.
  3. A wobbly dart board can also be due to one of the plastic spacers at the back of the board coming away.
  4. If this is the case, what I have done in the past is to use a little piece of wood as a packer to push out the face of the dartboard, which wobbles.

How high does a dart board stand go?

The stand goes as high as necessary to hold the dartboard in the correct position.  The standard height for a dart board is for the bullseye to be 5-ft 8 inches (172cm) from the floor. This height was chosen as it is the eye level height of a person who is 6-foot tall.

How far from a dartboard stand do you throw from?

The dartboard face should be 7-ft 9 and 1 quarter inches (237 CM) from the edge of the throwing line.

It’s probably easier to measure from the throw line to the face of the dartboard fixed to the stand and set the correct throwing distance.

Who does a stand-up dart board suit best?

Stand-up dart boards will best suit those players who are looking for an alternative to mounting a dartboard on a house wall.

In this case, a portable tripod dartboard stand is an excellent alternative.

Best place to use a stand-up dartboard.

The beauty of using a stand-up dart board is that they don’t have to be located at the same place all the time. You can use it in the house or outside.

You can even take it on a visit to a friend’s house if they don’t have their own dart board and you can therefore play darts on the go!

Can you use a dartboard stand outside?

If you are lucky enough to live in a location where you can play darts outside. Then a dartboard stand could be just what you’re looking for.

So yes! dartboard stands can be used outside.

What is a dart board tripod?

A dartboard tripod is a type of dartboard stand.

Similar to when a camera is located on top of a tripod to keep it steady when photographs are being taken. A dartboard  is attached to the tripod/stand

A dartboard tripod has 3 legs to keep it stable and a shaft onto which a dartboard is attached.

Which dartboard stand is right for me?

The best dartboard stand for you will be decided by a number of factors:

  1. Do you want to use it indoors or outdoors?
  2. Do you want it to be portable so you can take it to other places?
  3. And of course, your budget.
