What’s the right way for beginners to hold a dart?

Let’s talk through the grip from a beginner’s perspective. If you’ve never picked up a dart before, is there a right or wrong way to pick one up?

To put it bluntly, the answer is no!

What is most natural to do is when you first pick up a dart try and hold it like a pen because it’s very similar to what you do when you gotta throw a dart.

This is how I hold my dart like a pen

And with a dart, slightly different to the right due to the pen thickness…

Over time the more you practise and throw the dart I think the more comfortable you are going to feel with it in your fingertips. Your dart grip will therefore evolve to suit how you feel when you practise. You’ll actually find you do slight changes to your grip subconsciously with time.

As you can see from my photos above I only use two fingers and my thumb to grip the dart. Again this is due to throwing my dart like I would hold my pen. Some players use three fingers,

Some players even use one.

From studying players on the pro darts circuit (yes I record matches and watch how players grip the darts and even how they throw them…). Two Fingers is most common, three fingers or one finger are much less common.  and nearly every darts player leaves their little finger out of the throw.

But there are players who will use three fingers and even include their little finger because that is what suits them, that is what they have become comfortable with.

Very rarely players will include the top of their thumb to hold the darts, almost propelling it with their thumb as the last thing to touch the dark when they throw.  the game door anyone who does this will have a really feather like grip so that there’ll be no tension from any part of their hand as their release which might affect the Arc the dark takes on the way to the dartboard

More of my Television habits

By the way another thing I do whilst I’m watching the players on T.V. is have my darts to hand so that I can see how it feels to hold them as I’m watching other players play and adjusting my grip as I see how they are holding their darts.

The more you’ve got them in your hands the more it’s gonna feel comfortable and you will get used to a certain way of holding the darts the more you play around with them. It’s a bit like keeping a fidget spinner to hand but at least you can get some use as it will help your darts the more you have them in your grip.

How tight to hold my darts

The next thing to consider is how tightly you grip the dart. This is all about pressure.  and my main advice on this subject is you don’t want to put a lot of pressure on your darts.

Think about it, if there’s a lot of tension when you’re holding the darts and you try to throw with this tension in your fingers the dart is going to come out all wrong.

I like to think about holding them just like a Feather. You wouldn’t get that really take me. Thinking back in darts history, they were originally made with feather flights so it’s probably not too bad I think to think about

From watching pro players on TV I reckon Michael Van Gerwen is probably the best  at holding his dart really lightly so when he releases the darts fly so true and naturally.

Which part of the dart to hold

Confort comfort comfort, this is the key word to all I’ve mentioned so far and that holds true for where to hold the dart on the barrel as well.

As you can see I hold my dart near the front of the barrel but still where there is some grip.

Some people are back grippers, where their grip is near the back end of the dart barrel.

Some people are front grippers, where their grip is near the front end of the dart barrel almost touching the dart tip.

I personally don’t feel comfortable holding the darts either way like this as the dart doesn’t feel balanced in my fingers. But what I’m comfortable with doesn’t matter to anyone except me.

If it feels right and you can generally aim where you want to on the board then all power to you. Go for what feels best.

Holding the barrel in the middle over time you may find that you got more towards the front or the back that’s entirely fine it’s all about feeling comfortable with the dart in hand and being able to release as lightly as possible

There is always going to be a natural evolution to your dart grip, play around and see what feels most comfortable to you because at the end of the day it’s how you feel holding and throwing your darts that really matters.

Also remember the more throwing practise you do, the more comfortable you get with your own grip.

Takeaways

First time you hold a dart as a beginner, hold it like a pen.

Make sure it feels comfortable.

Don’t grip your dart too tight.

Let your throw evolve naturally.

Practice!

What is tic tac toe darts?

This is the dart equivalent of the basic game you have known and loved since you were little.

Begin by marking the scoreboard with three tic-tac-toe grids something like this

As usual, nearest the bull goes first and is able to pick X’s or O’s.

In this case Harry beat me so he chose X’s and threw first.

To get the numbers to correspond with a tic tac toe board we use the numbers shown here

You will see that they relate to 3 numbers spaced on the top of the board

12, 20 and 18

3 spaced along the middle of the board 11, bullseye and 6

And 3 space evenly on the lower half of the dartboard – 7, 3 and 2.

you don’t actually have to write the numbers on your scoreboard when you’re playing this is just for reference

So in the game you are aiming for the 9 numbers related to a section of the tic tac toe board. If you hit any number 3 times you get to put a 0 or a X in that space on the tic tac toe board.

So hitting treble 12 and you get to put your mark in the tic tac toe segment

Continue to throw 3 darts each and every time someone scores 3 hits in the same number they get to take that section on the tic tac toe board.

Tic tac toe video of scoring

My video shows you how to score in a tic tac toe game

How do you win at tic tac toe darts?

The winner of the game is the first person to get 3 in a row either vertically, horizontally or diagonally on the tic tac toe board.

Takeaways

Tic tac toe is an unusual game for darts but can provide you with good practice hitting parts of the board you might not normally go for.

The other good thing about tic tac toe darts is that its a lot of fun to play with the family.

Best way to throw darts

When throwing darts, it is important to grip the dart properly. You can use either a conventional grip or a pencil grip.

The most important thing is to hold the dart firmly, but not too tightly.

To aim, focus on a specific spot on the dartboard and line up the dart with your arm.

When you are ready to throw, bring your arm back under your arm under your chin, propel your forearm and hand forward – keeping your elbow as static as possible and release the dart.

How to throw and aim darts better

Throwing and aiming darts is not as difficult as it may seem. The most important thing is to grip the dart properly and to focus on a specific spot on the dartboard.

Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Grip the dart firmly, but not too tightly. You can use either a conventional grip or a pencil grip.
  2. Aim at a specific spot on the dartboard and line up the dart with your arm.
  3. Bring your arm back under your chin, propel your forearm and release the dart.
  4. Follow through with your arm after the dart is released.
  5. Try to recall what you have done!… so you can:
  6. Make adjustments to your grip, aim or throw next time if needed.
  7. Practice every day

How to improve your aim

There are a few things you can do to improve your aim. First, practice at home with some good practice routines.

Next, try to relax your muscles when you throw.

Third, focus on your breath and take slow, deep breaths before you throw.

Finally, throw, keep your arm relaxed and throw the dart in a fluid motion.

I use practice rings fitted to my board. These rings are a good way to improve your aim. I have some videos on how to use these on my youtube channel and XXXX. Use these throwing aids and remember to throw regularly.

how to stand when throwing a dart

The best way to stand when throwing a dart is to stand with your feet shoulder-width apart, with your dominant foot slightly back.

Then, bend your knees slightly and lean forward from your hips, keeping your back straight.

Finally, raise your arm to throw the dart.

Stay balanced throughout the throw. You can lean over the throwing line but your foot mustn’t cross the line.

How many hours a day should I practice darts?

This is a difficult question to answer as everyone is different. Some people might be able to throw for hours every day and not see any improvement, while others might see huge improvements after only practicing for a few minutes each day. The best thing to do is to find a balance that works for you. Aim to practice  for at least 30 minutes each day, and increase the amount of time you practice if you feel like you are not making any progress. Even a small amount of practice each day will make a big difference over time!

How often do the pros practice darts

The answer to this question varies from player to player. Some pros practice for hours each day, while others only practice when they have upcoming tournaments.

Some players might even take months off from practicing altogether. It really depends on the person and their goals.

If you are serious about becoming a professional dart player, then you should aim to practice for at least a few hours each day.

How to practice darts at home

There are a few different ways you can practice darts at home. One way is to set up a dartboard and practice by yourself. Another way is to find someone else who wants to learn how to play darts and practice together.

One important thing to remember when practicing at home is to focus on your form and aim.

Don’t just try to throw the darts as fast as you can, or you will not be able to improve your skills.

Take your time and focus on throwing the dart correctly.

You can also find online tutorials or videos to help you improve your skills.

Finally, there are practice aids that you can use to help you improve your aim and technique.

The most important thing is to find a method of practice that works for you and stick with it.

With enough practice, you will be able to improve your skills and become a better dart player!

How to throw a dart like a professional

There is no one specific way to throw a dart like a professional. Each player has their own unique style that works for them. However, there are a few general tips that can help you throw darts like a pro which are the same as practicing in general.

Make sure you are using the correct grip. Focus on your aim and form and remember to throw the dart in a fluid motion. At the end of your throw remember to follow through with your arm and hand fully extended. And as usual my tip is always to practice regularly.

Takeaways

There are many different ways to throw darts, and the best way is the way that works best for you.  However, there are a few general tips that can help you throw darts better.

Make sure you use the correct grip, focus on your aim and form, and remember to throw the dart in a fluid motion. Additionally, practice regularly to improve your skills.

Beginners Practice Routines

It’s easy just to go up to your board and throw darts but without a pan you aren’t getting what you could get out of your practice routines.

I’ve put together a list and quick description of some practice routines and a special bonus at the end to take your practises a bit further.

There are three practice routines that can help improve your ability to hit a double:

  • Up 10, Down 1

Here you start at 80 points and try to check out in 3 darts, (try and score 80 points and end on a double).

If you succeed, you move up to 90 points;

if not, you move down to 79 points.

The game continues until you reach 100 points or fall below 0.

  • One-to-One

The goal is to check out 121 using 9 darts or less.

For every successful shot at 121, you earn one point;

for every unsuccessful attempt using all 9 darts, you lose one point.

Try to get to 5 points then move up to 131 etc.

  • Around the clock

The purpose of the game is to get 1, 2, 3 and so on all the way to 20.

If you miss any number with three darts, you go back a step.

This will help when playing under pressure because your body starts to know where that sweet spot on each segment of numbers is located.

More beginners practice routines.

If you need more description or help just contact me.

Calendar

Throw at a different segment each day, based on what day of the month it is. If it’s 31, try to hit 31 in 2 darts.

Out

Choose an out (e.g.32) and try to hit the corresponding number on the dartboard, not the double, just the number.

You can choose a double finish i.e. 50, 40, 38, 36 etc or any score from 101 down.

Chase the Flight

Throw a dart and then aim for the flight/barrel instead of the board itself.

This helps develop grouping as you are aiming for a target you have just hit.

Blind Man/No-Look Throw

Close your eyes and throw at a particular segment; make adjustments mentally, not visually.

If you are regularly missing the board move on to another game lol.

One-to-One

Check out 121 in as few darts as possible. If you check out in 9 darts, go up 1 point, so try to finish 122 next;

If you miss in 9 darts then you go down a point.

Intermediate Player Practice Routines

I’ve added a couple of intermediate practice drills here in case you can easily do the beginners routines or if you are at that level and are looking for something new to try.

Bogey Double and Split

In this drill, you just practice hitting a double that you don’t like, as well as the split afterwards.

So if you don’t like or have trouble hitting double 17, then you aim for x17 and keep practicing down to the finish.

So in this example your first dart hits 17 so you play down to and finish on a double i.e. single 9 double 4.

Bob’s 27

This is a practice game where the objective is to get as many points as possible from double 1 to double top, but if you miss any double you are deducted the value of the double.

If you miss the target with all three darts, you are deducted the value of the double.

The goal is to get past zero without constantly missing, and to also get the bullseye at the end.

Tbh this one is very hard to finish with a positive score for me lol.

Shanghai

In shanghai you score as many points as possible on number 10 thru 15. (Being less popular numbers).

If you score a Shanghai on any of those numbers, you get a 100 point bonus.

Advanced Player Practice Routines

The first advanced level practice drill is called:

Modified James Wilson Style Game

(I know, that slips off the tongue lovely :(…)

In this game, you have to get 201 down to zero in six darts. If you can’t do it in six darts, then you lose the leg.

Keep playing and see if you win a best of 7 against yourself (you lose by missing!)

Next advanced drill is:

Round the clock 2

Your goal is to hit a double 1 through to bullseye for every number (1-21).

For every single dart that hits its target number you receive 50 points but if it’s on 21 (the bullseye), then you will earn 100 points.

Try and beat your record every time.

Special Bonus

I always struggled with grouping my darts and although aiming for the same targets on the board improved my game I found a way to get more out of this routine than just aiming for “doubles, trebles, bullseyes” all the time.

The whole idea behind darts is grouping, the closer your darts are the better your aim is and the more confident you will be to score.

I started using these dart rings and found my grouping improving quickly. This ring game will improve your game especially for anyone who gets bored practicing at home.

With these dart rings, you get a target to aim for and as you improve, you put the smaller rings on.

You can place them all over the board and take turns aiming for each.

This game is interesting because it makes you a great dart player – not just somebody who hits the bullseye.

Darts is a game that can be played with smaller or bigger rings, depending on your skill level.

You can keep track of your progress by writing down your scores.

The game is more interesting when you move the target around to different segments of the ball.

Go here to see a load of Practice rings videos.

Videos

Takeaways

  • There are many ways to practice darts and having a focus on your practice routine makes it time better spent.
  • By focussing on specific goals during your time at the board you will grow in accuracy and confidence as a player.
  • Unlike the old saying, practice doesn’t actually make perfect but practiced repetition will definitely improve your game!

What is a 9 dart finish?

A 9 dart finish is the minimum amount of darts you would need to throw to close out a game of 501 darts. There are a number of ways to complete a 9 dart finish:

  • Treble 20 (60), treble 19 (57) and double 12 (24)
  • Treble 20 (60), treble 15 (45) and double 18 (36)
  • Treble 17 (51), treble 18 (54) and double 18 (36)

Another way is to score 167 with each three dart throw:

Treble 20 (60), treble 19 (57) and bullseye (50)

Who has done a 9 dart finish?

John Lowe completed the first ever televised 9 dart finish in 1984.

Courtesy of Unicorn Darts

Paul Lim was the first player to hit a 9 dart finish in World Championship Darts.

Adrian Lewis is the first player to hit a 9 dart finish in a World Championship Final.

There have been over 420 “9 darters” since 1996

Only 3 players have hot 180’s after double start ( a double start is required in the World Grand Prix Tournament). These are:

Brendan Dolan

James Wade and

Robert Thornton

Interestingly James Wade and Robert Thornton were playing each other when they scored their individual 9 dart finishes!

Has anyone ever hit two 9 darters in a row?

It’s a question that has been on the minds of darts enthusiasts for years – has anyone ever hit two 9 darters in a row? The answer is…

No…

but it’s been close!

So what is the story?

Two players that have come closest to hitting two 9 dart finishes in a row. These are Phil Taylor (in the 2010 Premier League Final) and Michael van Gerwen (in a 2017 UK Open Qualifier).

In each case, both players hit two 9 Dart finishes in the same match. The next closest is Gerwyn Price.

Gerwyn hit two 9 dart finishes in one night in the Premier League when they played in Belfast. He produced his first flawless leg in a 6-5 semi-final win over MVG.

The Ice man then went on to repeat the feat when he won 6-4 against James Wade in the final.

That tells you just how hard this 9 darter is.

Do you think anyone will ever hit two 9 dart finishes in a row? Let us know in the comments below!

How To Play 501 Darts
  • You start with a score of 501.
  • Every time you throw you reduce your score by the points scored with your set of 3 darts.
  • Close out your score by finishing on a double!

How do you play 501?

Each player starts with 501 points and takes it in turns to throw 3 darts.

Whatever the score that each player gets with their throws is subtracted from their score until they reduce their score to zero.

However, remember ! You have to close out the scoring by hitting a double score so try not to leave an odd number. If you do leave an odd number you get ready to calculate what your “checkout” score needs to be.

Click here for a list of all darts checkouts You will see here there are some bogey* numbers.

(*Bogey numbers are scores in darts that you cannot checkout with three darts).

Watch this video to see everything you need to know about scoring!

How do you play 501 bust in darts?

If you are bust in 501 it means you have reduced your score to below zero.

The object of the 501 is to get your score to zero, however, you must finish the scoring to zero by hitting a double. If you score too many points on your “last” throw do not get zero by hitting a double or you score less than 0. You are bust!

Let’s look at what this means. There are a couple of ways you can bust.

If you score the exact score that you need but you do not hit a double then you are bust! For example you have a score of 16 left but instead of hitting double 8 you hit 16.

Aiming for double 8, but hitting 16 = Bust!

You need a double but hit to many points such as when you are aiming for double 4 but hit 18.

Aiming for double 4, but hitting 18 = Bust!

What happens if you have 1 point left in darts?

If you have 1 point left in darts you are bust because you cannot score 1 point by hitting a double.

If you find yourself on 1 point then you must go back to your previous score and aim to complete your scoring down to zero by hitting a double. This is most frustrating when you are aiming for double 1 and hit single 1!

What happens if you go over 501?

If you go over 501 you are bust!

Do you need a double to start 501?

There are professional games where a double is needed to start your scoring.

So in a normal game of 501 darts you do not need to hit a double to start so your scoring commences with whatever you hit with your darts be that in a double or not.r you hit

Can you do 501 in 6 darts?

Afraid not, the minimum amount of darts needed to finish a 501 game is 9..

For example you could hit treble 20 (60 points) treble 19 (57 points) then bullseye (50 points) to get a total of 167. So if you throw this score 3 times in succession to get 501 and finish on the bullseye!

Do you have to throw all 3 darts in 501?

You do not have to throw all 3 darts in a game of 501. Even if you are taking your first turn it is entirely up to you to throw all 3. It would be strange to do that but the rules of darts do not state that you MUST throw all 3 darts. My advice though 0 throw all your darts…!

What is the bullseye worth in 501?

The inner bullseye is worth 50 points. The outer bullseye is worth 25 points.

What is 3 Bullseyes in darts called?

When you score 3 bullseyes with consecutive darts it is called a hat- trick! Give it a try  :-/

Why do they start 501 in darts?

Pro players play from 501 as they are so adept at high scoring.

Playing from 501 ensures there are longer games and they must score more consistently to win each game.

Takeaways

Your strategy when playing 501 should be to score as many points as possible with each throw.

Once you have scored enough points you can concentrate on what darting check out scores / final throw to finish on zero that you will go for.

What are dartboards made of and how are dartboards made?

There are a number of materials available from which a dartboard can be made. These include in most common order:

  • sisal fibres,
  • cork, and
  • paper,

The material a dartboard is made from determines how long a dartboard will last.

Sisal fibres

Long fibres from the agave plant are collected into circular bundles.

Sisal fibres from the agave plant drying in the sun

These bundles are cut  into discs that are the width of a dartboard.

These discs are pressed together inside a dartboard shaped frame so they form a bed of fibres that have been compressed together.

This is glued to a backboard, a surround goes round the final shape and it is sanded to shape and to be smooth.

The colours you see are inked / painted on after the board has been put together with the backboard and sisal fibres!

The metal spider, which separates the different beds of the dartboard, is added after the colours.

The type of board will determine the country and quality of the sisal fibres used in the dartboard. For example, beginner dart boards can be manufactured from high-quality Chinese Sisal.

Professional dart boards on the other hand can be made from African or Brazilian Sisal. These are the most premium Sisal material and obviously endorsed for use in professional darts competitions.

Cork and paper

Unsurprisingly, cork and paper dartboards do not last for long as they do not have the properties of sisal to close dart holes naturally.

This results in them becoming worn, pitted and eventually broken through longer dart use.

Takeaways

Dartboards are manufactured the same size to ensure consistency so you will be able to play same sized boards wherever in the world you are.

Note that this may not be the case for practice boards which might be smaller to increase accuracy practice.

FAQs

What are dartboards made of?

Good quality dartboards are made of sisal fibres.

What are old dartboards made of

Older dart boards can be made of cork or even paper.
