What are dartboards made of and how are dartboards made?
There are a number of materials available from which a dartboard can be made. These include in most common order:
- sisal fibres,
- cork, and
- paper,
The material a dartboard is made from determines how long a dartboard will last.
Sisal fibres
Long fibres from the agave plant are collected into circular bundles.

These bundles are cut into discs that are the width of a dartboard.
These discs are pressed together inside a dartboard shaped frame so they form a bed of fibres that have been compressed together.
This is glued to a backboard, a surround goes round the final shape and it is sanded to shape and to be smooth.
The colours you see are inked / painted on after the board has been put together with the backboard and sisal fibres!
The metal spider, which separates the different beds of the dartboard, is added after the colours.
The type of board will determine the country and quality of the sisal fibres used in the dartboard. For example, beginner dart boards can be manufactured from high-quality Chinese Sisal.
Professional dart boards on the other hand can be made from African or Brazilian Sisal. These are the most premium Sisal material and obviously endorsed for use in professional darts competitions.

Cork and paper
Unsurprisingly, cork and paper dartboards do not last for long as they do not have the properties of sisal to close dart holes naturally.
This results in them becoming worn, pitted and eventually broken through longer dart use.
Takeaways
Dartboards are manufactured the same size to ensure consistency so you will be able to play same sized boards wherever in the world you are.
Note that this may not be the case for practice boards which might be smaller to increase accuracy practice.
